Episcopal Association for College Work Annual Report
In 1999, the EACW board of directors continued working on the objectives of the EACW's 1998 strategic plan. Several initiatives were implemented in 1999 that positively impacted the Christian community.
Scholarship Programs
The EACW scholarship programs have been significantly expanded. The EACW offers scholarships to high school graduates, undergraduates, and graduate school students. These scholarships are offered to UP Episcopal students going to any approved post secondary or trade school in the world and to any Episcopal students from outside the UP coming to an approved UP post-secondary or trade school. This change reflects the EACW's desire to expand its support of higher education for Episcopal students throughout the Upper Peninsula and beyond. Specific eligibility criteria for all scholarships have been developed. For example, the high school graduate scholarship requires that the applicant have at least a 2.5 grade point average, be in the top half of their high school class, and include a letter of support from their church.
Spiritual Growth Activities
The EACW Chaplain organized several spiritual events over the year. They included: April: Travel to the Province V Spring College gather, Turkey Run, Indiana September: Workshop with Gareth Lloyd Jones November: Workshop with Kenneth Leech November: Performance at MTU and BACC of the Ted and Lee Comedy team.
Other Outreach Activities
In 1999, the EACW continued its commitment to support the Keweenaw Family Resource Center's 'Mommy, Daddy and Me' program directed to MTU students with children aged zero to three. The program uses the facilities at Portage Lake United Church and financial support will continue through the year 2000. In addition, further funding was granted to the KFRC for a program aimed supporting MTU students who are single parents. This program also uses the facilities at Portage Lake United Church and to date has had a positive impact. These ministries address a basic community need for students and staff at MTU who are often a long way from heir families and traditional support community.
Also in 1999, the EAW continued its support of the Bay Area Campus Ministry (BACM) program that ministers to students and families of Bay de Noc Community College. This worthwhile endeavor is consistent with the EACW's desire to support campus ministry(s) in the Upper Peninsula and provides a valuable resource to the EACW chaplain in forming associations with other clergy and other student groups. This developing ministry has had an impact on its community and as a result, is gaining financial support from local entities and should be self-sufficient soon.
Financial Operations The EACW Board has moved forward in its efforts to maximize the use of its endowment by increasing investment in students/programs while, at the same time, continuing its growth. With the considerable expansion of the scholarship programs and other activities this goal is becoming a reality. Other general financial topics submitted by Sonia Goltz, EACW follow. EACW account balances Local account balance is $9899.43 ($64134.34 is liquid) Trust Association Balance (as of 9/30/99) is $1,617,323.86 Aggregate Balance $1,715,912.09
Fund Performance of the Diocesan Trust Association. Total YTD returns as of September 1999 are 3.44%. The Trust Association disbursed $90.000 to the EACW this year. 1999 Treasurer activities A system of checks and balances was proposed by the treasurer for managing EACW accounts to help protect both the funds and the parties involved in financial transactions. The system was approved by the board and implemented. In addition, at the request of the treasurer, a system was developed by an ad hoc committee of the board for handling emergency and non-emergency requests for funds. The system is being refined before implementation. The subcommittee also developed a budget for 2000 based on historical trends and anticipated future needs. This budget was presented and discussed at the recent Strategic Planning session of the Board. Conclusion In the coming year, the EACW looks forward to implementing initiatives developed at the board's December 11, 1999 strategic planning meeting and continuing the initiatives of the 1998 strategic plan. For example, a subcommittee of the board is investigating the possibility of a "Comparative Religions" class being added to the MTU curriculum. In addition, we hope to recruit for a board liaison from a different region's of the Upper Peninsula to help with program planning. Also, we are presently considering the purchase of a house located close to the MTU campus. In summary, it has been a good year for the EACW. I offer my thanks to the board members and to Nancy for their hard work, participation and commitment to the endeavors of the EACW and the greater Christian Community. Respectfully submitted,
Cameron Williams EACW President

Episcopal Association for College Work - 2000
2000 was an exciting year for the EACW!
Canterbury House The Board spent many hours studying the issue of buying a location to house both Canterbury Club and EACW activities. The matter came up rather suddenly when an excellent location, 1405 E. Houghton Ave. - directly across of MTU's Administration Building, became available for sale. After making the decision and receiving a zoning variance from the city we bought the house on June 24th.
Since then, Nancy Auer has worked with the Boards help to mold the house into a facility that will meet our needs. The open floor plan provides ample meeting space; a bedroom has been converted into an office for Nancy. Work continues on an as-needed basis, for instance we are buying window coverings and having the electrical system upgraded to current standards.
Spiritual Growth Activities EACW Chaplain, Nancy Auer organized several events in 2000. Included were:
Scholarship Programs The EACW scholarship program, in its 3rd year, provided ~ $25,000 in scholarship funds to high school grads, undergrads and graduate students this year. The Board also worked to fine tune the clergy scholarship program for implementation in 2001. Up to $15,000 will be available when that program comes out next year.
Other Outreach Activities In December, the Board voted to Support KFRC's Mommy, Daddy & Me program that is focused on MTU student parents for a -year period. The first check for $5,400 was sent at years end. EACW provided financial support for ECHOES from Heaven's trip to Africa and Spain in last summer. We also continued our support of Bay Area Campus successful student ministry program in Bay de Noc.

Episcopal Association for College Work Annual Report 2001
2001 was an exciting year for the EACW!
Chaplain's Report (Submitted by Nancy Auer)
This year has been one of many transitions for Canterbury Club and our Campus Ministry program. We have forged ahead with Canterbury House - located at 1405 Houghton Ave., Houghton, MI 44931. A wonderful donation by Debra Wright and her husband provided much needed beds and bedding as well as many kitchen items. Our big purchase for the house was insulting-type window shades for the windows in the living room and a computer to allow us to work from the house.
This spring we held Lenten activities at the house and we also experimented with Sunday evening Eucharist with Pastor Judy Ziemann. The house is used for meetings of the EACW Board and also for Cooperative Christian Campus Ministry (CCCM) meetings. This spring the EACW participated in the Senior Hotdog Walk again and Nancy is grateful to all those who helped out when she became ill. In the fall we again hosted the salad portion of the Progressive Dinner for all MTU students.
Our biggest news for Fall was the arrival of Father Ted Durst. The Canterbury House is being used as interim housing for both Fr. Ted and Mark Britt at this time. Our student participation has been small this year as student president Jacob Northey was kept busy with his soccer career and Cathy Bray, our past president, became engaged just after Christmas while we were at the National Gathering at Estes Park, CO. She and Brandon Charnesky were married this December 29, 2001 near her home in Saline, Michigan.
Nancy attended the annual meeting of the Episcopal Society for Ministry in Higher Education (ESMHE) this summer in Chicago, Illinois to continue to expand her experience with other campus ministers and clergy. While she was in Chicago she had a chance to meet with Father Durst prior to the search committee inviting him to Trinity.
In 2002, we look forward to developing Canterbury House as a site for an evening Eucharist with Father Ted, opening it to student use as needed and developing our website. Planned activities include attending the Province 5 Spring Student Gathering in April in Angola, Indiana a return visit to Mexico and expand ministry to Pimpollo Orphanage, the ESMHE meeting and the biannual National Gathering in December. If you know students we need to contact please let us know or if you are interested in participating in campus ministry at MTU please contact: Nancy Auer, Episcopal Campus Minister, 1405 Houghton Ave., Houghton MI 49930.
Canterbury House The Canterbury House has been sufficiently appointed since the annual report of 2000. Window covers and furniture have been added to facilitate the house's function. The EACW Board has agreed to allow Ted Durst and Mark Britt to occupy the house while they look for permanent residence.
House maintenance will continue on an as-needed basis.
Financial Operations (Submitted by Owen Mills)
The Diocese of N. Michigan Trust Association disbursed $60,000 to the EACW this year. These funds were used to cover operating and program expenses and $46,000 in scholarships to students and clergy.
Theresa Smith, the EACW bookkeeper, facilitated the EACW's financial tracking this year. These operations have become routine, enabling the Board to make fully informed decisions on monetary issues.
At mid-year the Board voted to diversity its portfolio by investing half of its endowment in a market index style fund. Several investment firms were contacted and implementation awaits formulation of an EACW investment policy.
EACW account balances were as follow at year-end (unless otherwise specified):
Local accounts: $ 41,206.61 Trust Association (as of 930/01) $1,437,926.19 Aggregate Balance $1,479,132.29
EACW Board of Directors Sonia Goltz and Owen Mills completed three-year terms as EACW Board members at years end. Chief among Sonia and Owen's many contributions to EACW was their work on the finances of the association.
Owen Mills completed a term as President in 2000 and assumed the Treasurer's position from Sonia in 2001.
Cam Williams served as the President in 2001 after a year off. This will be Cam's 3rd term as President. Joyce Menard will take over as president for 2002. Thanks Joyce!
We place in nomination at this annual meeting the following new board members. Jim Northey and ( ) who will serve as board members.
What's coming in 2002? The Canterbury House will continue to take shape as programs and furnishings are added.
The board hopes to complete an Investment Policy.
Respectfully Submitted, Cam Williams, EACW President
